Building Bridges Between Teaching and Learning

In this installment of In Search of Research I will discuss research related to assessment. The research that I discuss and the organization of this article come from a chapter in the Second Handbook of Research on Mathematics Teaching and Learning by Dylan Wiliam (2007). In the sections that follow, I will discuss assessment practices in the United States, potential harmful effects of grades, benefits of formative assessment, and components of formative assessment.
