Calculus in a Movie Theater (UMAP)
Author: Kevin Mitchell
Using elementary calculus techniques, this unit explores the concept of viewing angle as a criterion for determing the best seat in a movie theatre. This unit also includes a detailed outline for a students data collection and analysis project. The unit also addresses the question of the best seat in the theater converting the layout of the theater from a three-dimensional problem to a two-dimensional one. With completion of this module students will: 1) have an appreciation of the applicability of differential calculus; 2) have refined data collection and analysis skills; and 3) be able to write in the style of scientific journal.
