Mathematics: From Recreation to Application

Author: Richard Francis

Recreational mathematics, that branch of the discipline that refreshes one's spirit, is admittedly a difficult area to define. Such characteristic marks as diversion, relaxation, pleasure, and change of routine likely come to mind.

But can rigid dividing lines be drawn that separate the key mathematical pursuits of the theoretical, the applied, and the recreational? Perhaps an integrating of thoughts and active endeavor preclude a subdividing of the discipline into such watertight compartments.
