Although the origins of gambling are not recorded, there is evidence of it in the histories of most peoples. Dice were invented by the Ancient Egyptians, sports betting was common throughout the Greek and Roman empires, and carnival games were popular in medieval England. The first chronicled horse race i n England occurred more than 800 years ago. It is recorded i n the words of William Fitzstephen, the clerk of Thomas a' Becket:
