SPECT: Mathematical Principles and Historical Remarks

Author: Fawaz Hjouj

Introduction

We explain the underlying mathematics and physics of two medical imaging techniques:

• computed tomography (CT), and
• Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT).

The analysis constitutes an interesting application of Fourier analysis for undergraduate students from diverse fields, such as mathematics, engineering sciences, and others.
