The Minor Means

The Office of Publications of Local College makes the following statement: Although our College is large, its individual departments are small enough to promote close working relationships among the academic staff. Our average department size is only twelve faculty members. The Local College Faculty Union President is puzzled by the assertion of an average of twelve faculty members. Most of her colleagues claim to be in large departments. To verify the average, the union president asks each faculty member the size of his or her department. Table 1 gives the results of the union president's survey.
